In pediatric dentistry, fluoride treatments provide a highly effective means of preventing cavities and ensuring the future health of kids’ teeth.
At Cherry Lane Kids Dentistry in Meridian, we recommend this critical treatment to our patients as a part of our commitment to creating a lifetime of healthy smiles for your children. During the formative years of your child’s physical development — beginning as soon as the primary teeth emerge and continuing through the teens — we recommend having these treatments once every six months.
Protect Meridian, Idaho Kids’ Teeth with Fluoride Treatments
For kids and adults to maintain their oral health, we recommend that they brush twice a day, use dental floss daily and visit the dentist every six months for a professional cleaning and comprehensive exam.
In addition to this standard routine, however, kids also need exposure to fluoride to help prevent cavities and gum disease.
When kids regularly get fluoride, it helps to harden their tooth enamel, allowing the teeth to develop a natural resistance to plaque buildup. This can significantly reduce dental issues and health problems throughout their adult lives.
Fluoride Treatment Options
Systemic fluoride treatments are ingested, and when taken during the developmental years, they help strengthen teeth and bones. If you have fluoridated water in your community, your children can derive these benefits automatically by drinking tap water.
However, since few families drink from the municipal water supply today, the effectiveness of fluoridation has diminished.
Because many kids don’t get systemic benefits from their community’s water, we offer topical fluoride treatments. We can apply these directly to the teeth, or prescribe a special fluoridated toothpaste, both of which provide the external benefit of resisting decay. This approach does not, however, provide the benefits that systemic treatment can during your child’s development.
Your regular toothpaste (purchased over the counter) probably has a small concentration of fluoride in it; however, the it’s likely not strong enough to provide any significant benefit.
How Are Fluoride Treatments Applied?
When we administer a topical fluoride treatment, the technician applies a special fluoridated gel to all surfaces of your child’s teeth. We then advise that your child avoid brushing as well as eating and drinking for a specific period of time.
In most cases, we recommend this treatment for your kids each time they come in for a checkup. However, if your child is prone to developing cavities, we may recommend a special toothpaste to use at home in addition to the in-office treatments.
